What is the difference between standard deviation and standard error?
Standard deviation describes the spread of individual data values around the mean. Standard error describes how precisely the sample mean estimates the population mean — it equals SD divided by √n.

Should I use standard deviation or standard error for error bars?
Use SD when showing the natural variability of your data (descriptive). Use SE or 95% confidence intervals when showing precision of your mean estimate (inferential). SE error bars are always smaller and can make results look more precise than they are.
Why does the standard error get smaller with larger samples?
Because SE = SD/√n, increasing n reduces the denominator, shrinking SE. With more data, your sample mean becomes a more reliable estimate of the population mean — even if the underlying data variability (SD) stays the same.
